In 2008, right wing media was Fox News and Drudge Report. Smartphones were luxury items. Facebook was still how you connected with your college roomates. Obama’s platform was extremely moderate, he is a once in several lifetimes orator, Biden helped him win white voters in Ohio and Pennyslvania. Bush was deeply unpopular. Shelby v. Holder hadn’t been decided.

Right wing media exploded BECAUSE OF OBAMA’S VICTORY, and was strengthened as smartphones became more accessible and apps and right wing media expanded. Obama became even more unpopular when he said that he looked like Trayvon Martin as a teenager.

A moderate Black man with an incredible organizing team, running against an aging senator and batshit VP, and a bland oligarch stuffed suit, with no increases in voter suppression and a right wing smear machine was able to be elected twice. But there is a long term revolt due to the fact that he discussed the impact of racism in America and because Black Lives Matter mobilized during his presidency.

This is Kwame Tu, more commonly known as Stokely Carmichael. He was one of the original freedom riders; a prominent member of the black panthers party; part of the revolutionary socialist pan-african movement of the time. He was one of the leaders targeted by the FBI for destruction by COINTELPRO.

He coined the term ‘institutional racism’ and came up with the term ‘black power’ in the first place.

He died of cancer in 1998.

(I’m adding this because I’ve seen this quote wrongly attributed to Frank Hampton, another black socialist member of the BPP who was martyred by the state.)

Okaaaay. If any of you actually have a grease fire in the kitchen put the lid on the pan. It will suffocate the flames. Don’t pour water on it, and don’t freak out. Cook safely!
